Read all about it. Read all about it.

The way we read the news has changed a lot over the last 20 years. Although many people still choose to buy a daily newspaper at the newsagent’s every morning on their way to work, many others subscribe to an online version and are constantly updated with fresh news whenever they connect. The sound of “read all about it, read all about it” that newspaper sellers used to chant on the street corners so that people on their way to or from work would buy the newspapers they were selling is, without doubt, a thing of the past.

Many people used Black Friday and Cyber Monday in late November to start buying presents. After all, December was only a week away and December means Christmas. Depending on where you live, you will be exchanging gifts, eating too much food and drinking in excess around the 25th of the month, unless of course you are lucky enough to live in the Netherlands where they celebrate Sinterklaas on the 6th of December.

But, isn’t it a little early to be talking about Christmas?

Reduce, Reuse Recycle, React.  How seriously do you take recycling?

The advertising campaign recently launched in the press and TV in Catalonia uses the slogan “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, React”. It wants us to make a greater effort to recycle our rubbish. It claims that in this part of Europe people recycle only 40% of the waste they generate and this, it seems, isn’t good enough.

What on earth am I talking about? Well, idioms of course.

The learning process has changed dramatically in recent years. Long gone are the days of chalk and talk when the teacher used to talk and talk and write on the board and students sat, listened and took notes. Nowadays classrooms and learning spaces are much more interactive places and technology has played a major role in this interaction making learning much more fun.

And the 45th president of the United States of America is ……

By the time many of you read this post the result of the 2016 United States presidential election will be known.  You will now know if the president is a woman for the first time or whether US electors have decided to throw caution to the wind and vote for the controversial figure of Donald Trump.

Do you know however that the United States presidential elections are always in November and depending on the calendar for a particular year can be on any day between 2 – 8th November?

That’s a question you’ve probably never been asked and yet it is uttered tens of thousands of times every day in British households. It means “Would you like a cup of tea?”

Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock, the clocks go back.

Ticking clock

Twice a year we change the time on our clocks and watches. In spring we move them one hour forward and in autumn they go one hour back. When I was at school we were taught two phrasal verbs to help us remember what way to change the hands on the clock; in spring the clocks spring forward and in autumn they fall back. (Fall is the American way of saying autumn). Easy!

Hello, Hello, Hello

Hello and welcome to the CIM’s (Centro de Idiomas Modernos, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) blog. What better way to start off the blog than with a “Hello”. “Hello” is a standard way to greet people, but it hasn’t always been used that way.
