December 21, the winter Solstice, is a magical date for many people. It is considered to be the shortest day (and the longest night) of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and during this time, before Christianity and Christmas, the pagan and Germanic tribes of northern Europe celebrated their winter festival.  They called the 12-day festival “Yule” and during it they killed animals, finished making their beer and prepared for the long, hard winter months ahead.

December is the month when newspapers and the internet are full of end-of-year quizzes and lists of the top 10 most important or dramatic or surprising events that took place in the previous 11 months. Other end-of-year lists include the most famous people who died in 2016 and of course the top ten songs of the year.

Although many people still choose to buy a daily newspaper at the newsagent’s every morning on their way to work, many others subscribe to an online version and are constantly updated with fresh news whenever they connect. Many people used Black Friday and Cyber Monday in late November to start buying presents. After all, December was only a week away and December means Christmas. Depending on where you live, you will be exchanging gifts, eating too much food and drinking in excess around the 25th of the month, unless of course you are lucky enough to live in the Netherlands where they celebrate Sinterklaas on the 6th of December.

But, isn’t it a little early to be talking about Christmas?

The learning process has changed dramatically in recent years. Long gone are the days of chalk and talk when the teacher used to talk and talk and write on the board and students sat, listened and took notes. Nowadays classrooms and learning spaces are much more interactive places and technology has played a major role in this interaction making learning much more fun.
