A very popular activity on the C1 English language course is a spoken activity where students describe a member of their family from the past. Everybody loves talking about family and you don’t need to be a member of the Royal Family to have interesting ancestors.  Here we look at genealogy (the study of family history) and family vocabulary.

 

Chocolate at Easter!

Easter happens on a different date every year; it is a moveable celebration. The date of Easter depends on the moon and it can be any time between March 22nd and April 25th. This year Easter is late and Easter Sunday will be on April 21st.  When Easter finally arrives this year many people will celebrate with chocolate eggs. But is this a good thing?

Did you know that the summer solstice happens when the sun is in its highest position in the sky as the North Pole tilts towards the sun by 23.4˚? This is the longest day of the year in terms of sunlight as the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn in the Northern Hemisphere. The exact date for this changes every year but it is somewhere around the 21st June. However, this event is not just important for astronomy.
